Kerala is famous for the High literacy rate state of India with 93.91 in 2011. Coming to the Food of Kerala, it’s highly rich in numerous varieties of its food and authentic dishes. In this article, we will show you the 10 best dishes of Kerala that one must try once in life at least. The motive of this article is to show you some of the best food items of Cuisine of Kerala that one should try. Kerala is the land of Coconut trees and that’s why it has mostly usage of Coconut in every second dish.


1. Fish Mappas

Fish Mappas is Kerala styled curry that is cooked in creamy coconut milk with Fish. It’s served with appam. The combination of Fish Mappas with an appam is extremely delicious and yummy that you want to eat it more and more. The fragrance of Coconut in the curry makes it more appetizing.


2. Meen Muringakka Curry

It’s an amazing sardline fish curry which is served with hot steamed Rice. Meen Muringakka Curry is prepared with coconut, muringakka (Drumsticks) and tamarind. Garnish it with Red chilli and shallots and this heavenly tasty dish is ready to eat. It’s a must-try dish of the cuisine of Kerala.


3. Chemeen Pollichathu (Pan-seared Prawns)

Chemerin Pollichathu is my personal Favorite. Marinated Prawns are added in the spices and lime juice and then cooked in the Coconut milk till it soaks all the liquid from it. Trust me, when you eat the so juicy Prawns then you would become a ‘Fan’ of this Lip-smacking dish.


4. Cheera Thoran

Cheera Thoran is a stir-fry dish of Kerala. It's stir-fried with spinach, coconut and spices. It’s prepared with green chillies, turmeric, chopped garlic and a mixture of curry leaves. It’s a very easy to the made dish and can be served with rice, appams and parathas.


5. Sadya

It’s the best dish to have for lunch as it’s quite heavy. It’s combined with lot of curries and rice and sweet payasam. In a Regular Sadya, 5-8 curries are involved in it. It’s a traditional dish which is served on the Banana Leaf. Sadya is mostly prepared during festivals and occasions and it’s purely a vegetarian dish.


6. Kozhikode Biryani

It’s not just another Biryani. Kozhikode Biryani comes from down south and it’s a very famous biryani of Kerala. Kozhikode Biryani is prepared with rice, chicken, spices and topped with a boiled egg. It’s a spicy biryani as Red chilli is used to make it and it’s very delicious and appetizing.


7. Kerala Fish curry

It’s my personal Favorite. Kerala Fish Curry is the authentic taste of Malabari spices with juicy fish pieces. The white flesh fish with the curry made up from tomatoes, garlic, onions, green chillies and Coconut paste tastes you delicious that you want to eat this dish on repeat mode.


8. Erissery

Erissery is the traditional dish of Kerala which is mostly prepared during festivals and marriages. It gives an amazing combination of Coconut and Pumpkins.  These two important ingredients make it so appetizing and mouth-watering that you can’t resist eating. It’s a very popular dish of Cuisine of Kerala.


9. Unniyappam

It’s the most traditional dessert of Kerala which is prepared during festivals and special occasions. Unniyappam is stuffed with jaggery, banana and rice. It’s a brown-coloured, spongy and crispy sweet dish of Kerala that you just can’t miss. Its taste is so unique and authentic.


10. Palada Payasam

Palada Payasam is a very famous sweet dish of Kerala which is served mostly after Lunch. It’s prepared from milk, rice and sugar and traditionally served on the Banana Leaf. Garnish it with raisins and Cashew Nuts which make it look more appealing and enhance its taste too.
